EER in Climate Zone 12 Can Be More
Important Than SEER
New-Century
Air Systems
N.E. California
EER (Energy Efficiency Ratio) can be more important than SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) depending on the climate zone you live in. For past 25 years ARI (American Refrigeration Institute) has rated air conditioning by SEER The SEER rating doesn’t take into consideration the different climate zones. SEER is a nationwide average temperature during the peak summer months. The SEER rating is based on 82º outside temperature, and 75º inside temperature. California has 16 climate zones. The higher the zone number, the hotter the climate, with exception of zone 16. The Sacramento Valley is zone 12, which is a hot zone. EER is based on 95º outside temperature, and 75º inside temperature. In zone 12 the EER is the more important rating. The closer the SEER is to the EER the more efficient your system. Example: 14/12 is excellent. 17/11 is not as efficient in climate zone 12. The average peak temperature range in the Sacramento Valley is 95º to 104.9º. The offical highest recorded temperature is 115º. ( See The California Energy Commission Zone Map Below. )
Climate Zone 16 is a high mountainous, and semiarid region above 5000 feet in elevation.
